Income Tax

Canada’s tax system pays for roads, public utilities, schools, health care, police and much more. Employers usually deduct taxes from the income they pay you throughout the year.

You may have to file (fill out and send in) a tax return (income tax forms) even though you lived in Canada for only part of the year.

You must file a tax return if you:

  • Owe tax
  • Want to receive a refund (money back) because you paid too much tax
  • Want to receive the Child Tax Benefit or GST credit.

Your tax return for the past year has to be filed on or before April 30 each year.
You need to have a SIN (social insurance number). See section on Documents/Identification.

You must report “world income” (income from inside and outside Canada) for the previous year. You may be able to claim deductions such as rent, property tax, medical expenses or tuition.
